The practice of wearing poppies was inspired by the beautiful and moving poem, “In Flanders Fields,” written in 1915 by a Canadian soldier, John McCrae, when he saw red poppies springing up in burial fields around his artillery position in Belgium:
In Flanders Fields
In Flanders fields the poppies
blow
Between the crosses, row on
row,
That mark our place; and in
the sky
The larks, still bravely
singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the
guns below.
We are the Dead. Short days
ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw
sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now
we lie
In Flanders fields...
This Memorial Day,
support our veterans by sending a donation to your local American Legion or
other not-for-profits that offers services to veterans and their families.
We thank and honor our military - every man and every woman who has served past and present. And we remember always, those who have died in service of our great country.
